After being electrocuted by lightning, Number 5, an experimental military robot, suddenly develops human emotions and intelligence. It escapes its lab and finds refuge at the home of an animal-loving pacifist (Ally Sheedy), who helps it learn about the world. While attemping to return his creation to the lab, Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), learns of Number 5's evolution and must protect it from the government, who want to use their creation to win the Cold War.
